Some of you may be aware of what Guy Fawkes night is, but for those of you who don’t, I shall explain.
There are a number of names for the 5th November. It’s called Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire Night, Fireworks Night, and probably more depending on where in the UK you live.
Remember, remember, the 5th November
Gunpowder treason and plot
We see no reason
Why Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot….

The History
Guy Fawkes Night marks the anniversary of the failured Gunpowder Plot that occured in 1605. 13 men, including Guy Fawkes (who’s actual name is Guido), plotted to blow up the House of Parliament in London. The reason for them plotting to kill the English King and members of Parliamnet was so they could reestablishing Catholic rule in England.
However, the plan failed when the conspirators were betrayed by an ‘anonymous tip’ who historians believe to have been a man called Francis Tresham.
Current Celebrations
So, every year on 5th November, fireworks are set off all across the UK. Many people have petitioned for the sale of fireworks to the public to be banned, as this goes on from the 1st November, for about a week and causes lots of animals, children and veterans distressed.
It is typically turned into a social gathering, with fair rides and stalls, and sometimes a huge bonfire.
Below are my photos from the night:
I’ve never heard of this before until reading your post. Thanks for sharing more about the history and the photos look so great!
Thanks for sharing the details about Guy Fawkes night. I didn’t know about this before!
I like your review of the history of Guy Fawkes and your photos. I’d love to visit London one day and experience this.
You’re right. I have never heard of this holiday. So interesting that you explain a bit more about the history. I love knowing the meaning behind holidays.
It looks like a fabulous night. I was in London for New Year once and that was great and looks kind of similar to this night. I would love to see it one day!
Living in Canada, I’ve never heard of this day – so interesting! I love fireworks so I would be very sad if they were ever to get banned. I understand limiting them due to pollution, but some events are definitely worth celebrating with fireworks.
I lived in the UK for a bit, and I loved the Guy Fawkes Night festivities. I can see why some people want to ban fireworks, though. We have similar problems here in the US with our Independence Day celebrations. My dog would agree – she always hides when the fireworks are set off!
